âYou shoulda come down to lunch, sugar. Giovanni missed you.â Lauryn set down a bag from the food truck in front of Nick, her brows drawn together. Neither of them ever stayed in the office for lunch unless a project required it, and since their first date, Gio ate with them regularly. However, Nick wanted to avoid Gio, which meant skipping the meal. After recent events, he needed some space to figure things out. First the aborted dinner and Gioâs revelation, then getting plastered at Laurynâs party. Shit, he wished he hadnât let the situation with Gio lead to him drinking, or maybe if he let it lead to him drinking more, then he wouldnât remember his behavior afterward.
After spending Sunday lost in his own head, Nick realized what he needed to do. In reality, what he needed to do a while ago, had nearly done it during their dinner date, but he talked himself out of it, told himself he just needed time. He couldnât keep doing this though. It wasnât right, and it made his stomach churn when he thought about continuing to lead Gio on. He needed to tell the man the truth. Not being ready to do it though, he took the cowardâs way out and avoided him.
Lauryn propped her ass against the table and ran her red nails through Nickâs dark brown hair. âYou know, Gio seemed kind of worried when he saw you werenât with me today. Is everything okay? It seemed like things were going well between you two.â Nick glanced up at her briefly before focusing his gaze back at the table again. He refused to meet her eyes, unable to tell her the truth. He didnât want to destroy her elation at her matchmaking bearing fruit. His gaze fell on their current project and he sighed.
Nickâs phone, alerting him of a text, saved him from answering. When he opened the message, though, he wanted to bang his head against the table.
Giovanni: Nicky, Baby, I feel like youâre avoiding me. Are we okay? Did I do something? Talk to me, please, Baby!
âItâs Gio, isnât it?â Lauryn asked him, fingers tapping against the table. Nick nodded. No way would he talk about this over text, but he hated lying to Gio. Everything was not okay.
Nick: Sorry, I wasnât feeling well. Look, why donât you come by around six for dinner?
Nick would tell him at dinner about his feelings for someone else and how he wanted to be friends. He was done. This wasnât fair to Gio, and it wasnât working for him.
Gioâs response was immediate. God, Baby, you had me scared! Iâd love dinner. Iâll see you tonight. ;)
Nick: See you tonight.
Nick cringed as he wrote it. He hated that he still seemed to be leading Gio on, but he would be damned if he broke the guyâs heart in a text. He glanced at his watch, surprised to find it was barely one in the afternoon. He stood and started gathering his stuff into his messenger bag.
